Session 3 — When Live Loses Purpose… the Reverse Lesson

Suggested questions — feel free to pick and choose, or come up with your own. You can also find the video script online here

Q1: What are some of the ways you have looked for purpose in your life, both inside and outside of church? Did you achieve those things in full, in part, or not at all?

Q2: Many who achieve success in this life (celebrities in particular) often exclaim “anyone can achieve their dreams if they just work hard enough”. To what degree have you believed this to be true? What aspects of life does this mindset fail to acknowledge? And what’s the dark side of this philosophy (i.e. when you try your very best, and don’t succeed)?

Q3: In difficult seasons of life, how do we remain ambitious for Christ, not wanting to shrink back from the things he’s called us to, whilst also ensuring these things don’t become like an idol to us (things we seek our hope and value through)?

Q4: For the brave — have you ever, through no fault of your own, had your sense of purpose reduced, shifted or extinguished, in a way that left you disorientated? And did it diminish your sense of worth and value?
— If so, what beliefs or thought patterns do you think were behind this?
— Did we actually believe our worth was diminished in the eyes of our Heavenly Father, or that his purposes had run dry in our lives?

Q5: Sometimes, without realising it, we can be tempted to love “human praise more than the praise of God” (John 12:43) — even seeking praise from other Christians rather than God’s praise first and foremost. How does searching for God’s praise as our highest priority change what we do and how we go about it?

Q6: Are there specific hopes and dreams, tasks and achievements that you set for yourself that you need to be released from? Is it okay to press pause on these, or let them go altogether? And could God be that God has got some new ones for you, that might be a little different?
